I've booted up a Ubuntu live beta 2 release candidate CD as I'm going to
run the testcases on it.  Here is the output of the commands:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
Unity
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ 

I can install any desktop environment you like if it helps testing of
this problem.
