It can't be consistently and reliably triggered. There are times when I don't see this bug show up at all. I've never seen it show up with a short PDF, however by keeping evince open for extended periods (sometimes days) while viewing a long document and switching between windows, the bug tends to appear at the point where I either ALT+TAB to the evince window, or navigating the document with the mouse wheel, arrow keys, or j, andr k keys.
Read a long document, say a book, while making notes in another window and you'll eventually see the error.
