I have to ask if 20-25 bytes really make that much of a difference when dealing with image files. Still, I found several ways to get rid of the comment: 1- Set an empty default comment in Preferences -> Default image. 2- Uncheck "Save comment" (this appears for instance when saving as GIF or PNG; I didn't see it for JPG). Hopefully one of these will make GIMP-edited images more suitable for your use case. I'll set this bug report as Incomplete pending confirmation of whether this helps mitigate your problem.
