I installed Ubuntu 12-04 LTS (beta) to check if a later version of evolution solved this. Unfortunately no! one time I got a pop-up for a birthday, and it was gone by the next boot!? I like the look and feel of evolution and very much like this potential very useful option fixed.
Note In the an very old evolution ( that comes with ubuntu 10-04 ) I got the birthday reminders working a little. A pop-up showed up briefly when the exact time -for instance- 14 days, BEFORE a birthday. After that it disappeared again, that cannot be the intention, the reminder must stay there until the day of an event is passed or even manually checked out.
