btw, besides the point of the preferences not working, I would be satisfied with ANY of the following when I receive an IM:
a. chat window pops up and steals focus (lots of people don't like this, which is understandable) b. small NON-HIDDEN blinking icon somewhere (some people don't like this, which seems debatable) c. small NON-HIDDEN non-blinking icon somewhere that merely changes color -- even that's easier to notice than something that requires me to keep compulsively checking with my mouse (how can anyone seriously be against this?)
