OK. I linked it to the upstream bug report. Things with Ubuntu 10.10 seem to have improved. Although it depends on the content of the folders.
For example, it takes 38 seconds to open a folder with 15,000 images (.img and .hdr) but only ~6 seconds if the files are .dcm.
