How? To replicate it, you have to make an enduring change to the system
and then reboot, and of course the live environment is running off read-
only media.

I had reason recently to do a fresh install 11.10 briefly and I'm about 90% 
sure the same problem *did* occur, but there's that 10% uncertainty. Similarly 
I believe 11.04 has the problem as well.
