I have just done a fresh install. The only difference between this
install and my previous installation is that I have mounted /home on its
own partition, as opposed to having only a / partition. Both the Trash
applet and Nautilus trash now are able to see and empty trash stored in
my ~/.Trash folder.

The bug does seem to be that gnome-vfs sees the / partition as being a
"rootfs" filesystem rather than "ext3" or whatever other real filesystem
you are actually using.

To prove this theory wrong, someone will have to come forward with a
freshly-installed dapper or edgy system, with the /home directory tree
belonging to the / mount point rather than a separate mount point, and
who does not see this bug.
