I presume you meant 'aa-complain' and yes, that fixed it. I had thought that the problem might be AppArmour related, but did not think to check /var/log/syslog, which clearly showed that AA was the problem. Below you can see both the before (DENIED) and the after (ALLOW) -- after I ran aa-complain -- in the syslog file:
