Roger, you are right that the HPLIP developers at HP also use this site as their upstream bug tracking system, but this particular bug report has an HPLIP upstream task which is marked invalid as it turned out that the problem described here is not a problem of HPLIP. The problem is a Poppler upstream bug and all Ubuntu package tasks marked as fixed here are indeed workarounds, making Poppler only generating PostScript level 2 or replacing Poppler by Ghostscript (the latter is done in Oneiric) due to lack of a fix in Poppler upstream. Plaes continue discussion in the Poppler upstream bug (as you already do). This is the real culprit and these developers have to provide a fix.
