I reinstalled as instructed. At first, no effect.

Then I restarted my X session, and the bug became a Heisenbug.

The first attempt at opening a file wrote the following to the console,
and started bug-buddy (it did not do so last time):

** (gedit:5473): WARNING **: Could not load spinner rest icon
sys:1: GtkWarning: gdk_draw_segments: assertion `GDK_IS_DRAWABLE (drawable)'
failed

The second attempt at opening a file worked without a fault. I was
unable to do so more than once.

The third attempt failed again, but just wrote the following to the
console (i.e no lines about assertion failures our glibc double frees or
corruptions):

** (gedit:5669): WARNING **: Could not load spinner rest icon
sys:1: GtkWarning: gdk_draw_segments: assertion

A later attempt failed again, this time with the following message:

** (gedit:5669): WARNING **: Could not load spinner rest icon
*** glibc detected *** gedit: double free or corruption (out): 0x084d7830 ***

The problem may be at a lower level than gedit itself. Because, in all
those cases that bug-buddy was launched, bug-buddy itself spewed a lot
of complaints to the console, of the form:

** (bug-buddy:5486): WARNING **: Couldn't load icon for Notification
Area

** (bug-buddy:5486): WARNING **: Couldn't load icon for Volume Control
etc.
