with universe enabled install unity-greeter, then edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf Uncomment / change greeter theme to unity greeter-theme=unity restart lightdm and click in upper right corner next to clock. you will see the familiar logout menu. clicking system settings brings up gnome-control-center for me with at least some icons. if i then log in the window stays, but newly opened ones in my user session still don;t work.
