Your problem seems the exact opposite of mine: I have no problem copying large files and it is not slow. In my case what is slow is copying many small files. It seems like in my case the overhead is in creating files, but only when copying them (if I extract the same files from a zip directly to the usb drive it's fast, and it's creating the files anyway)
