here is a good description of this bug: http://askubuntu.com/questions/19323/nautilus-wont-browse-my-usb-hard-drive-unless-i-double-click-it-twice to reproduce this bug: - make sure that pluggin in your usb device (external hard drive or usb stick) does not automatically trigger nautilus to open - double-click the desktop icon of your device the first time: nautilus won't open (that's the bug) - double-clicking it again actually opens nautilus - you have to double-double-click a device desktop icon to open the device in nautilus this bug exists for a long time.
