Hey, I just switched from Windows to Ubuntu 12 hours ago so I might not know what I am doing.
I also have the same problem with the 1 pixel icon in the panel so I looked around and found this file. Run it in the terminal and select restore panel to default. Now my skype icon is showing perfectly.
