I'm having what I would assume is the same issue, and if it is, I can confirm that it has nothing to do with closing/opening the laptop lid. When my battery is fully charged, the icon displays its most discharged state, but the indicator itself displays the correct battery time left. Although after having discharged just somewhat (10 minutes, perhaps), the icon reverts to the fully charged version.
