I narrowed this down a bit, it hangs with /bin/ls -l /home/vries and
doesn't hang with /bin/ls /home/vries.

I have 2 sshfs mounts in my home dir which could cause this.
xxx.xxx:/home/vries on /home/vries/gateway type fuse.sshfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,max_read=65536,user=vries)
yyy.yyy:/home/vries on /home/vries/build type fuse.sshfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,max_read=65536,user=vries)

So the scenario could be:
- network outage occurs
- sshfs hangs/disconnected
- nautilus hangs
- gnome-panel hangs

I guess a hanging sshfs could cause nautilus to hang (I have both mounts
and a folder from one of them as favourite place).

The only connection I can see between gnome-panel and sshfs is that the
mounts are done by a shortcut from gnome-panel.
