Hello Andre I have solved the problem by restarting the computer. Another user alerted me to the fact that the networking applet Wicd can give unreliable information, and that Evolution can ¨think¨ the computer is offline when in fact it is connected to the internet.
I have been having trouble setting up a wireless pci card, and at the moment, whilst the pci card is recognized, I am still connected by cables.
