Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

When GNOME Settings Daemon crashes, the system reverts to some baked-in
defaults. The icons and settings used are not Ubuntu's default settings,
and don't look too pretty.

It would be better, I feel, if the baked-in defaults would be Ubuntu's
defaults, so that when the settings daemon crashes, your system still
looks like Ubuntu and not like GNOME 2.0.
