It is definitely trying to grab information each time you click on the clock applet. (I checked my network usage.)
If you set evolution to work in "offline mode" (File>Work Offline) everything is as fast as before. Right now I have 5 calendars enabled and have no lag! Not a big deal for me because I don't use it to check email.
