I am currently running Ubuntu 10.04 as a fresh install after a failed upgrade... still retaining my old /home partition. The Ubuntu install sits patiently waiting for me while my current production install is Kubuntu 10.04. Nice to have a backup if needed. I think this bug can be closed at this point since it seems to be a one-off strange occurrence with nobody else reporting the same issue. Thanks for your followup.
