Update: 3) Lucid with Dust theme: No corruption after several days of usage and lots of reboots. Dust uses Murrine, but doesn't seem to suffer from the corruption issue, at least with the version included with Lucid. The version in Karmic would cause corruption for me when I used to use that version of Ubuntu. It might be possible to narrow down the cause of the bug by examining the differences between the two versions of Dust, and also the differences between Lucid's Dust and Ambiance themes.
