Sorry this seems to be a false alarm. I rebooted the PC and Disk Utility correctly shows the format type as ext4. For what it is worth I reformatted one of the drives from ext3 to ext4 using Disk Utility and the other from the command line. They were both ext3 to start with. Both of them did show as ext3 until the reboot. I guess this bug could be closed.
