You have been subscribed to a public bug: First off, this may not be a bug in Ubuntu 9.04. Rather, it (they) may be "user-caused" screw-ups... Probably so...!
I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 (haven't converted to 9.10 nor 10.04 due to not knowing how to work with GRUB2) 2 or 3 times trying to get a usable install. Each time, I reset (via the System > Preferences menu) the display resolution of my Soyo LCD display from 1280 x 1024 (everything is too small) to 1152 x 864. For a long time all was fine, now, for some unknown reason, I do not have the top nor the bottom Task Bar. In trying to search for a wrong file setting for the display height, I found "/home/dave/.gconfig/apps/sysinfo/%gconf.xml" containing a "window-height" value = 790. To me, this looks suspicious, & about right for what I see on the display. However, without access to the top menus, I don't know how to get into a Terminal so I might invoke sudo to edit the file... assuming I've discovered the actual cause. I've other computer problems, too, but they're with XP (like a 2nd boot menu, after the initial GRUB menu, that lists 2 instances of XP - the upper one of which is none-functioning... & I don't yet know how to fix that mess). Any & all valid assistance will be very greatly appreciated. Ubuntu 8.04 worked fine, but I just "had to try" the newer versions.
