I've just whittled down a logged in session so that the only X clients
were just gnome-session, an xterm and gnome-panel (which stubbornly
respawns if I try to kill it). Despite having so few clients, the output
of

xrestop -b -m 1 | grep '<unknown>' | wc -l

stayed above 200.

I'm now running gnome-session from a failsafe xterm client, so that if
it happens again I can kill gnome-session and see if that drops the
number of unknown client windows. However I'm starting to think there's
no fix for this once it's happened and it is just a matter of
identifying the culprit process. I will run for a while without gnome-
screensaver, but I think that has long since been fixed. chromium is,
imho, a more likely candidate.
