You are right.

I just created a new user, and it worked as expected: evince opened a embedded 
pdf inside firefox window.
I use a lot of addons and because of that, keep reusing my $HOME/ (and 
.mozilla) directory.
  
Upon further investigation, I found out that some addon (or myself, a long time 
ago :-)) configured firefox to use /dev/shm/... (ram disk?) as Cache directory. 
With about:config, removing  browser.cache.disk.parent_directory and restarting 
firefox solved the problem.

Sorry for wasting your time :-( 
Note to self: always try with a new user before submitting a bug.
