If I remove "splash" from the linux line in grub, I don't get the screen
corruption.
This would be a fine solution if I could get it to stick.  It seems I
have to do this manually every time I reboot. I've tried removing
"splash" from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in the file /etc/default/grub
and running an update-grub, and I've tried removing it from the
/boot/grub/menu.lst defoption= line (and running an update-grub), but
the offending entry always ends up back in my grub list at bootup.
