I agree with owen, above. When the login screen appears, the boot sequence may still be going on in the background.
The end of the boot sequence is signalled audibly with the drum sound (provided, of course that you have sounds on), so the system knows perfectly well when it is done booting. Perhaps the "Login" button on the login screen should simply be kept disabled until the boot sequence is completed?
