I agree with owen, above.

When  the login screen appears, the boot sequence may still be going on
in the background.

The end of the boot sequence is signalled audibly with the drum sound
(provided, of course that you have sounds on), so the system knows
perfectly well when it is done booting. Perhaps  the "Login" button on
the login screen should simply be kept disabled until the boot sequence
is completed? There's no harm in letting the user type in the username
and password while the boot process is still running (I do that all the
time); it's just that the user should not hit the "Login" button until
the computer is fully booted up (I have gotten into the habit of waiting
until I hear the drum sound, and only then hitting "Login"; I haven't
had any problems since).
