I found a workaround in german from 2008 on this page: http://soltano.blogspot.com/2008/03/hp-compaq-6720s-der-tragdie- zweiter.html He used the vbetool dpms off command. I did not try it. Maybe someone finds it helpful.
I tried Mackkies workaround (commenting out all lines in the /etc/acpi/events/videobtn file).
