I had exactly the same behaviours that were described in the bug report and I solved them by removing the assistive technologies software using the Ubuntu Software Centre, which I learned was the problem following the link in Peter's post. To remove the software, I had to log in as root, since not doing so requires you to authorize the removal, which isn't possible, because the window cannot be given focus.
