I have made some testing and it's a bug in the GTK theme (or perhaps the
engine?), not in the actual applet. Changing the default (Ambiance)
theme to some other (like, for example, Lucid X) fixes this issue (or
not, depending on how the theme is designed, I suppose).

That said, the bug remains open, since the default theme on Ubuntu
carries this behavior, and new users are inflicted with it. The first
usability impression is what counts most, and this bug doesn't help it.
