spoke too soon. This bug seems very intermittent. Sometimes a file will transfer, sometimes it fails, sometimes rhythmbox crashes, sometimes it doesn't.
I notice a number of things: 1) Crashing happens more frequently when I queue up a large number of files for transfer 2) plugging in the device AFTER rhythmbox is open makes it more crash-prone.
