actually, I did the Lucid test on a different system that I hadn't used rhythmbox on before.
an additional data point- I also loaded a CD sampler (wxpn.org) that did have different artists, and that worked as expected. Maybe the import function needs a prompt to choose between disks with multiple artists and tracks with multiple tunes?
