Stan, did you find anything from log files as to what might be causing
this? I can't find anything.

It seems strange that it only happens when accessing certain
directories.

It also seems strange that if I copy the contents of an offending
directory into a new directory, the problem goes away, so it can't be an
issue with the content of the files themselves.

Doing ls -l shows the attributes to be the same on the old and new
directories, so it's not a permissions problem either from what I can
tell.
