Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

It appears that running "Sound Preferences" adds another volume icon to
the notification area, although I'm not sure why.

To reproduce:

1. Left click on the monochrome sound icon that appears in Lucid by
default and select sound preferences.

2. Note that another sound applet is added to the notification area, but
with a different icon.

3. Note that you can't right click on this new icon and remove it from
the panel.

See attached screenshot taken using the Humanity icon set, not "ubuntu-
mono" which is default in Lucid.

Note: I don't believe this is a duplicate of bug 401294 because that was
apparently fixed in Karmic.
