Solution to brightness problem can be found here. Although it's works a bit funny*, I'm very pleased. I used the version, where pressing buttons causes the script to write values directly to the device memory. * sometimes brightness-step-down looks like step-up, but it doesn't bother me at all. In general, it works fine.
