Did a little digging. 1) Used the same session, logged out and started an xterm session - no gnome-screensaver.
2) Logged out of the xterm session and logged back into gnome - 1 instance of gnome-screensaver. Sounds like two get started only when the system boots? Can't figure out how or where there.
