I agree with #1 and #7.  
Maybe Digikam could:
-unmount the device for us so that digikam can use it?
-provide a more thorough message suggesting that the user unmount the device?  
Add to the error line:  You may also need to make sure that the camera is not 
mounted and in use by another program.  

Like #1 points out I've gotten in the habit of clicking unmount from the
gnome popup, but I'm sure that this could cause problems for other users
that don't know this workaround.
