My apologies for not responding before. Being new to Linux, I am kinda afraid I might be just saying something stupid and wasting your time.
Anyway, I found out the problem is related to my MSI-K8TM mobo (Via- based chipset). As I understand there will be a Quirk-MSI-K8T kernelpatch for Dapper to solve the problem. However, I still wonder: if it is a mere sound problem, how come the problem only occurs when trying to run #init 2 (the default Ubuntu- runlevel)? Whereas running runlevels 3-5 (which all use the same initscripts, but other than runlevel_2's) give no (sound)problem. Comparing /etc/rc*.d, I notice rc2.d contains powernowd.early and stop- readahead scripts, while the other rc's lack them. And as I wrote before, #init 2 makes my machine totally irresponsive after login while the sound hangs (no keys-combinations work), so i have to push the reboot-button. The same actually happened when I tried to install Ubuntu with the Live-CD. With Knoppix on the other hand I've never had any problem to start. Is it correct that powernowd.early is a specifical Ubuntu initscript? I'm only wildguessing here, but could my machine have issue with powernowd.early? At the moment I'm trying Edgy Eft Knot3_amd64 on an other partition. I've no problem starting runlevel 2. Is it due to the Quirk-MSI kernelpatch? Or is it something else that fixes the problem (e.g. Upstart...)? I don't know. The following is what I get from #dmesg ...snip [ 18.799654] PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00) [ 18.801904] PCI: Ignoring BAR0-3 of IDE controller 0000:00:0f.1 [ 18.802176] PCI: Quirk-MSI-K8T Soundcard On [ 18.802178] PCI: Unexpected Value in PCI-Register: no Change! snip... I do have problem though with Edgy ;-). It wont reboot or halt my machine!! But that's ofcourse a different bug. -- Gnome freezes after log in https://launchpad.net/bugs/38219 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
