I have this problem too, and actually filed a bug report before coming across this one (559577).
After GDM login, a blank desktop wallpaper appears, followed by some hard drive activity and then the log-in sound. There is then a 20 second pause without any harddrive activity, after which the gnome panels appear, and more harddrive activity before it's all ready to go. This makes the boot significantly slower than Karmic!
