Could you please check this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/559111 See if you have the compiz package installed. If not, install it and see if the problem goes away (this should allow Compiz to start). If not, try to remove the mentioned file under ~/-gconf and keeping Visual effects on None (this should allow Metacity to start).
