Unfortunately, I cannot continue reporting on this bug anymore. I have reinstalled Karmic, done a clean install, that is, and now I am in a process of restoring all from backups. The keyboard works just fine now, at least with only one keyboard layout (Finnish) present. I have NOT tried adding the Russian or US-intl keyboard layouts to the system yet.
There were other problems, too, with my computer and the Ubuntu installation: random hangs now and then and a problem with power management so that the monitor did not power on again if the computer had decided to save energy and turn it off. Also the computer had occasional problems finding entries mentioned in '/etc/fstab' (including the root level or '/boot').
