The situation with this bug has improved slightly with Lucid. Now, the screen darkens after the idle time set in screensaver configuration panel and is locked upon activity. In Karmic the screen would start to darken and just go back to full brightness.
I can also confirm above --debug workaround. We almost have a working screensaver (minus the actual screensaver part).
