I've run into this bug a number of times also, but it's happened for me due to permission errors rather than my ipod running out of space.
Often when I plug in in my ipod, it gets mounted as root:root instead of my desktop user and if I forget about that and try to copy stuff to the ipod, I get a storm of error popups.
