OK what happened was the following : The side pane width got to zero and was not visible. So I thought that this was a display mode from which I could not escape. I tried the different options for about 45 minutes over and over again.
In my opinion allowing zero width side pane is a bug. Not restoring normal display when the width of sidepane is 0 and when the "reset the view defaults" is selected is another bug. I understand if they are not considered as bugs. Thank you for your help Bruno Girin.
