I think we all still care; we've just given up hope of anyone fixing it. My workaround is to create a "Quick Start" folder in the Gnome menu, populate it with the same apps I would have put in the drawer, then put that folder into my toolbar. The look is quite a bit different than the drawer, but it provides similarly easy access to frequently used applications.
