Happens also to me, but with Rhythmbox starting already in icon mode. Killing doesn't work, and I have not found any option to avoid the "notification area" mode. The only way I found to show rhythmbox up is to launch it again (via terminal, Alt+F2 or by clicking "Rhythmbox Music Player" under Applications > Audio and Video)
