I confirm the gnome-panel high CPU usage/growing memory consumption issue. It occurs on an upgraded Ubuntu 9.10, on a Lenovo T61 machine. I've completed the upgrade to 9.10 just a few days ago and I don't have Skype installed. Now I can't login to the system, because the issue occurs right after entering the login credentials: the Ubuntu-is- loading-progress-bar just freezes and when I switch to terminal (Crtl+Alt+F1), I see the reported symptoms in 'top'. Switching to GNOME- failsafe helps only to load all the panels (all the content is missing thought), but the interface is unresponsive. Switching to terminal and 'top' shows the same symptoms. Selecting xterm during the login process gets me that far to open Firefox and write this.
