You have been subscribed to a public bug:

With Xubuntu 9.10 on a TV monitor (640x480 native resolution), if I set
the resolution to 1024x768 (or any other higher resolution than 640x480)
and then reboot, I'll be stuck on GDM, and will not load the Xfce
desktop (come back to GDM again and again), until I remove the
/home/user/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-prechannel-xml/displays.xml file
via a tty terminal.

Back with Xubuntu 9.04, the desktop always loaded with a 640x480
resolution even if I seted it higher. It wasn't optimal but at least it
worked.

I know I report this bug for a powerpc arch which is unsupported, but
it's unrelated cause I founded the same bug on a i386 arch.
