I'd assumed this was broken before then.]
The fact that you can make it change by just enabling compiz vs metacity without even logging in or out is actually great news; if it really -is- metacity, that's not a large codebase. Can you be precise about what you're doing to enable/disable compiz so I can try the same tests? Is it just the Visual Effects thing, going from the lowest to the highest "effects" mode? Can you also do something like "ps -elf" or "ps -elf --forest" and diff them to see which processes are running in each case? That's pretty crude, but might give us an idea of where to look.
